Tour for Accompanying Persons

Registration for all tours has been closed.
There is no waiting list available for now. However, we will accept applications on the day at the travel desk in the venue if there were some cancellation.

On this page, you will find a list of local tour available for the companions of the participants in ICE2024 Kyoto. These historical sightseeing and cultural activities described below will provide the companions with a great opportunity to experience the vibrant ancient capital city of Kyoto.
Note: The Companion tours schedule is subject to change.

If you are joining one of the first four tours (Tours-1~4), the participation fee is included in your companion’s registration fee and there is no additional charge.
If you wish to participate in any of the other three tours (Tours-5~7), an additional fee will be required through the travel agency JTB.

[1] Kyoto Wheel Pottery Experience

Kyoto is also famous for Kiyomizu-yaki ceramics. At Zuiko-gama, located near Kiyomizu-dera Temple, You will try your hand at making pottery from clay using an electric potter’s wheel. Shipping charges apply, but the finished pottery will be delivered to your home as a memento of your trip. After the experience, you will visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which is registered as a UNESCO cultural heritage site, and enjoy your lunch at Gion Area.

[2] Japanese SAKE Brewery Tours

Kyoto is also a city of sake brewing, and in ancient times there were many sake breweries within the city. Sasaki Sake Brewery near Nijo Castle is one such brewery. You will tour inside a sake brewery, a traditional sake brewing place in Kyoto. After the tour, you will visit the World Heritage Site Nijo Castle and have a lunch in Shijo-Area.

Zazen is a fundamental method of training in Zen Buddhism and it is still popular activity among people in Japan. Zazen also has the effect of calming the mind and regulating physical condition and breathing. At Tatezoin Temple near Arashiyama, you will experience zazen under the guidance of a Buddhist monk. Lunch can be enjoyed in conjunction with a walk around Arashiyama.

[4] Green Tea Making Experience

Uji tea is made using a process that originated in the Uji region of Kyoto, Japan’s tea capital. You will learn to grind that Uji tea with a stone mortar to make matcha (powdered green tea). After the experience, visitors will tour Byodoin Phoenix Hall, a temple built about 1,000 years ago that is depicted on the 10-yen coin. You will enjoy your lunch in Uji-area.

[5] Kyoto Katana Knife Making and Workshop Tour

“Katanakaji”, a swordsmith is a professional craftsman who heats a lump of iron and hammers it into a single Japanese sword. There used to be many swordsmiths in Japan, but now there are only about 300 in the country. You will experience making a small sword at “Masahiro Tantojo” where a swordsmith is present. It is also possible to engrave your name on the small sword you make and take it home as a souvenir.

The Nishijin Textile Center has 50 mini handlooms, by which you can weave a table center cloth (approx.. 20cm x 30 cm in size, and take it home with your souvenir when finished. At Tondaya, you will also experience wearing a silk kimono and tour a traditional Kyoto townhouse. For lunch, you can enjoy Kyoto cuisine in the Okazaki area.

[7] Japanese Culture Experience (Flower Arrangement/ Tea Ceremony / Calligraphy)

This tour will run daily from the 26th to the 29th. At Washinkan, a Kyomachiya located in the Higashiyama area, you will experience one of traditional Japanese culture such as flower arranging (Ka-dou), tea ceremony (Sa-dou), and calligraphy (Sho-dou). You can try your hand at arranging seasonal flowers in a vase, so-called ikebana, enjoying matcha tea in a quiet tearoom according to etiquette, and writing letters using ink with a brush. After lunch, you will head to the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, which is very popular with tourists visiting Japan.
